Week 342 (26th April 2024)

A delivery company has a total of 160 cars and vans across the UK.

The ratio of cars to vans is 3 : 7.

Each car and each van use electricity, diesel or petrol.

1/8 of the cars use electricity.

25% of the cars use diesel.

The rest of the cars use petrol.

Work out the number of cars that use petrol.

 Answer:

To start with we need to share out 160 into the ratio of 3 : 7 to find the number of cars and vans.

First we can add the ratio numbers up: 3 + 7 = 10, then divide 160/10 to find out multiplier, which in this case is 16.

3×16 : 7×16     48 cars : 112 vans

We can then find the number of cars using electric by multiplying 48 by 1/8, which is 6.

Then we can work out the number of cars using diesel by multiplying 48 by 0.25, which is 12.

Finally, to find out the number of cars using petrol we can just calculate the number of cars remaining. 6 + 12 = 18, then subtract that from the total cars. 48 – 18 = 30 petrol cars
