Week 295 (5th May 2023)

Caroline is making some sandwiches for a coronation street party at the weekend.

To make one cheese sandwich, Caroline uses one bread roll and two cheese slices.

A pack of 15 bread rolls costs £1.88.

A pack of 20 cheese slices costs £2.15

Caroline is going to buy enough packs to have exactly twice as many cheese slices as bread rolls.

Caroline is going buy enough to make more than 100 cheese sandwiches.

Work out the least amount she can spend.

Answer:

Number of packs of rolls required = 100/15 = 6.67

So, she will need to buy a minimum of 7 packs of bread rolls

 7 packs of 15 bread rolls = 7 x 15 = 105

 This would require 210 cheese slices (105 x 2)

 Number of packs of cheese = 210 / 20 = 10.5

This would mean that she would need to buy 11 packs of cheese slices, but then she would have more cheese slices than bread rolls.

If she bought 8 packs of 15 bread rolls, this would = 8 x 15 = 120

This would require 240 cheese slices (120 x 2), which is divisible by 20.

So, number of packs of cheese = 240/20 = 12

Total cost = 8 x 1.88 + 12 x 2.15 = £40.84
