Week 277 (9th December 2022)

A group of friends have been loving watching the world cup and it has inspired them to play more football!

The friends have split themselves into two teams.

One team is captained by Ben and the other by Josh.

Ben’s team play two games against Josh’s team.

In each game the teams can either win, lose or draw.

In each match they play, the probability that Ben’s team will win against Josh’s team is 0.3 and the probability that ben’s team will draw against Josh’s team is 0.1.

Work out the probability that Ben’s team will win exactly one of the two football matches against Josh’s team.

Answer:

So, Ben could win the first match, or he could win the second match.

The probability of winning the first match but not the second = 0.3 x 0.7 = 0.21

And

The probability of winning the second match but not the first = 0.7 x 0.3 = 0.21

We need to add these two together to get the total probability = 0.21 + 0.21 = 0.42 (or 42%)
