Andy is taking part in a climbing competition.
After two events Andy has scored the following:
Event 1: 24 out of 30 points
Event 2: 32 out of 38 points
Event 3 is out of 52 points.
Andy’s overall score is found by adding the three scores together.
Find the score that Andy needs in event 3 to achieve 85% of the total points.
Answer:
First find the number of points the climber needs to achieve
Find 100% of the total points by doing 30+38+52=120
Therefore, 120 is 100% of the total points
Next to find 85% of 120 multiply 120 by 0.85 to get 102
Therefore, the climber needs 102 points
Then work out how many points the climber needs
He has 24 and 32 points so 24 + 32 = 56
Therefore the climber has 56 points
Then to find the number of points he needs do the total number minus the number he already has
120 – 56 = 46 points
