Week 329 (12th January 2024)

At the local secondary school there are 200 year 7 students.

At the start of the school year the year 7 students chose one language from French, Spanish or German to study.

Of the 200 year 7 students…

90 are boys and the rest of the students are girls.

70 of the students chose to study Spanish.

60 of the 104 students who chose to study French are boys.

18 girls chose to study German.

Work out how many boys chose to study Spanish.

Answer:

Firstly we can find the number of total girls by doing 200 – 90 = 110

We can then find total number of people doing French and Spanish: 104 + 70 = 174

We can then add on girls doing German: 174 + 18 = 192

Now we can work out how many boys doing German there are: 200 – 192 = 8

We can find the total boys doing French and German: 60 + 8 = 68

Finally, we can find the boys doing Spanish: 90 – 68 = 22
