Emma is stocking up on a few items ahead of the return to school. 

At the shop… 

A notebook costs £1.50  
A pen costs 60p  
A pencil case costs £9  

Emma buys 3 notebooks, 2 pens, and 1 pencil case.  

What fraction of the total cost is the cost of the pencil case?  

Answer:  

Cost of items:  

• Notebooks: 3 x 1.50 = 4.50  

• Pens: 2 x 0.60 = 1.20  

• Pencil case: 9  

Total = 4.50 + 1.20 + 9 = 14.70  

Fraction for pencil case:  

900/1470 = 30/49   

Answer: 30/49
