Oliver is a Year 11 student and is currently studying for his GCSE exams in the summer. During his lessons this week Oliver and his classmates have completed some mock exams.
Oliver has completed two Geography tests which were both scored out of 60.
In test 1, Oliver scored 45 marks out of a possible 60.
Work out how many marks he needs in test 2 to have a mean of 70% in the two tests.
Answer:
Since the total marks in both tests is 120 the total marks the student needs to get is 70% of 120
To do this multiply 120 by 0.7 to get 84
Then since the student has already scored 45 marks you can subtract 45 marks from the total needed of 84 to get
84 – 45 = 39
Therefore, the student would need 39 marks in the second test.
