As a holiday treat Alice has been enjoying pancakes and chocolate spread for her breakfast!
A jar contains 300g of chocolate spread.
In this spread:
• 58% of the mass is pure sugar,
• 1/8 of the mass is cocoa,
• the mass of the milk powder is 4/5 of the mass of cocoa,
• the remainder of the 300g is vegetable oil.
Calculate the percentage of vegetable oil in the chocolate spread.
Answer:
58% of 300 is 300 x 0.58 = 174 so there is 174g of pure sugar
1/8 of 300 is 300 x 0.125 = 37.5 so there is 37.5g of cocoa
4/5 of 37.5 is 37.5 x 0.8 = 30 so there is 30g of milk powder
The mass remaining is 300 – 174 – 37.5 – 30 = 58.5g
58.5g as a percentage of 300 is 58.5/300 x 100 = 19.5%
