As the new school year approaches a secondary school is reviewing some student questionnaires.
During the last term 45 Year 7 students and 55 Year 8 students were asked what their favourite core subject was between maths, English and science.
5 of the 7 students who said English were in Year 8.
25 students said science.
4/5 of the Year 7 students said maths.
Work out the number of Year 8 students who said their favourite subject was maths.
Answer:
Since 5 of the 7 students who chose English were in year 8 it means 2 were in year 7
4/5 of 45 = 36 so 36 year 7 students chose Maths
There are 45 total year 7s so 45 – 36 – 2 = 7 so 7 year 7s chose Science
Since 25 students chose Science 25 – 7 = 18 so 18 year 8s chose Science
There are 55 total year 8s so 55 – 5 – 18 = 32 meaning 32 year 8s chose Maths
