Alison makes her own granola for breakfast. Yesterday Alison made a new 500g batch ahead of the weekend.
In this granola:
- 52% of the mass is rolled oats,
- 1/5 of the mass is dried fruit,
- The mass of nuts is 3/4 of the mass of dried fruit,
- The remainder of the 500g is coconut flakes.
Calculate the percentage of coconut flakes in the granola.
Answer:
Total mass = 500g
Oats (52%) 0.52 x 500 = 260
Oats = 260g
Dried fruit (1/5) 1/5 x 500 = 100
Dried fruit = 100g
Nuts (3/4 of dried fruit)
¾ x 100 = 75
Nuts = 75g
Add the known masses:
260 + 100 + 75 = 435
Total known mass = 435g
Find the mass of coconut flakes
500 – 435 = 65g
Convert to a percentage:
65/500 x 100 = 13%
The granola contains 13% coconut flakes
